Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a fanzine?
A: A fanzine is a collection of works centred around a specific theme. This zine will feature writing, art, and merch focused on the characters of Genshin Impact and their imagined Pokémon companions.
Q: Is this zine for-profit or for-charity?
A: This project will be a for-profit zine, meaning any profits made will be split equally between all mods and contributors once the project comes to a close.
Q: Is this zine spoiler-free?
A: This zine will allow themes and characters of Genshin Impact that have been officially revealed by the end of the pitching period, so we cannot guarantee it will be completely spoiler-free.
Q: What content will be allowed?
A: This zine will be 100% SFW, with canon-typical levels of violence and gore allowed. The main zine will allow any canon ships to be included; however, non-canon ships will not be permitted. Multiple characters will be permitted to be shown together in a platonic setting. We may allow some ambiguous pitches where the relationship could possibly be considered as more than platonic, provided this fact is not specifically stated and depending on the surrounding content of the pitch.
Q: Can I apply for multiple roles?
A: You may apply for multiple contributor roles! However, contributors will only be accepted for one role.
Q: What is the age requirement for this zine?
A: All contributors must be 18+ at the time of final payouts of the zine (~October 2025).
Q: How will contributors be compensated?
A: Contributors will be entitled to a free digital copy of the zine at minimum. Depending on profit, we also aim to provide up to a free full bundle of the physical zine and merch to all contributors.
In a situation where we are unable to cover the full cost for contributor bundles, we will offer the items to contributors at production cost. Contributors can also choose to forgo any physical compensation if they so please, however this will not increase their monetary compensation.
Any additional profit will be divided, split evenly between contributors and mods.
Q: When and how do I apply?
A: When contributor applications open on December 2nd, 2024, the application forms will be linked on the front page of this Carrd. You can also check out our social pages for any updates on contributor applications.

Contributor Guidelines and Expectations

General Guidelines:

1. All applicants must be 18 years of age by October 2025. Any applicants who are found to have been dishonest about their age may have their application dismissed (or be removed from the project) without warning.
2. Applicants must ensure that the submitted links are viewable to the moderators. To test if your links are viewable, you can use incognito mode on your browser.
The moderators will not be responsible for contacting applicants regarding broken / inaccessible links and if your links are inaccessible, your application will be dismissed.
3. All submissions must be the applicant's own work.
4. Previous zine experience is not required! Contributors will be chosen based on skill, as well as how well their submitted pieces fit the theme of the zine.

Page Artist Application Guidelines:

1. Samples should be specific works chosen by the applicant that best showcase their skills!
2. These works must be completed and submitted individually. Please submit three (3) of your best pieces as your samples!
3. Feel free to link a portfolio, i.e. a Google Drive, social media page or personal website. Submitting a portfolio is not a requirement, but it is encouraged, as it may be used as a tie-breaker between applicants.
Required Content:
1. Applicants must submit three (3) total pieces of what they consider to be their best works. At least one piece must include at least one Genshin Impact character or one Pokémon.
2. All submitted pieces must be completed artwork with a minimum of flat coloring. At least one must include a detailed background.
3. Traditional samples are welcome and should be scanned in high resolution (min 300 dpi).
4. Artists’ pieces will be assessed based on a variety of factors (including anatomy, composition, perspective, lighting, shading, posing, and background, if applicable) as well as how well the artist’s style will work with our chosen theme.
Page Artists who are selected will be asked to create either a single page piece or a spread piece for the zine that is fully rendered and includes a background. 1-2 page comic pitches will also be considered.

Writer Application Guidelines:

1. Samples should be specific works chosen by the applicant that best showcase their skills!
2. These works must be completed and submitted individually. Please submit three (3) of your best pieces as your samples!
3. Feel free to link a portfolio, i.e. a Google Drive or Ao3 profile.
2. Each sample submitted should be between 1,500 and 3,000 words long. The total word count for your samples must be no less than 4,500 words and no more than 8,000 words.
3. Excerpts from longer works can be used as samples, however, one of your samples must be a complete work. This is to evidence your ability to write a complete story within a given word count.
4. Writers' works will be assessed based on a variety of factors, including grammar, pacing, syntax, sentence structure, characterization, use of detail, and the ability to tell a story within a defined word count.
Writers who are selected will be asked to create a piece with a word count of ~2k. We will also consider pitches of multiple short-form fics that combine to the same word count.

Merch Artist Application Guidelines:

2. Two (2) of your samples must be samples of merch items. The third may be a ‘print’ style piece. These can be either digital mockups of merch items, or high quality images of merch that you have successfully produced.
3. All submitted pieces must be completed artwork with a minimum of flat coloring. We strongly encourage submitting different types of merch samples (i.e. sticker sheets, charms, prints, etc.)
4. Merch illustrations from previous projects are welcome. Photos of actual merch are also accepted, however these must be high-quality imaging to best display the piece.
5. Merch Artists’ pieces will be assessed based on a variety of factors such as anatomy, colour usage, composition, perspective, shading, and posing. Originality with designs will also be taken into consideration.
Merch Artists who are selected will be required to create 1 Genshin-themed Pokémon Card and 1 other piece of pre-determined physical merch (which will be detailed in the invitation email). They will be requested to create one piece of digital merch of their choice.
